Septarians were formed millions of years ago when decomposing sealife in ancient oceans combined with surrounding sediment to form balls of ‘mud’.  As the oceans receded, the balls were left to dry and crack. They also shrank at the same time, trapping these internal cracks. Over many subsequent years, calcite was carried down into the cracks, filling the cracks and occasionally forming beautiful crystals in the cavaties.
